Babylon 5
- Release date:26 January 1994 (USA)
- Genre:
- Summary:Babylon 5 was a ground-breaking science fiction series, the first to utilize a multi-season story arc for its entire run. It was written and plotted from the start as a "novel for television", with a clear beginning, middle and end. Moreover, it was a visual effects pioneer, being shot in cinematic 16:9 rather than the standard 4:3 of TV, and all the visual effects were completely computer generated (CGI) at a time when models were still the standard. In setting, Babylon 5 was also atypical, a change from its predecessors, in that it dealt not with a utopian society coming to grips with nature and the unknown, but with inherently flawed humans and aliens, their problems and conflicts, hatreds and likes. Others have followed suit, but Babylon 5 was the first. There are conspiracies of light and shadow, choices made and consequences faced. For all the serious plot lines, there are plenty of moments of humor to lighten the mood. [+]more

I watched from Babylon 5: The Gathering until season 4 episode 21. IMO the proper ending was season 4 episode 20 and everything after that should have gone to a sequel series. I started out thinking it was a badly made forerunner of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, with a good plot but bad dialog, costumes, sets, CG, and acting. Somewhere around season 2 I started thinking that it is was better. It has a plot and focuses on it. It goes into the details of politics, diplomacy, law, medicine, and pretty much everything else that's relevant to the story. It does its best to be realistic and not go way too over the top. It avoids cheep thrills in favor of more realistic yet still very interesting action and warfare. Everything is tied together so things that happened a season or 2 ago are explained and naturally tied in to everything else. There is great humor, especially regarding Ivanova, Londo, G'Kar, and Vir, they make me laugh almost as much as in SG1 and SGA. In short: it's more realistic, more detailed, more focused, less full of itself, less over the top, and way funnier than Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, so much so that I thought it was a few years older and that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was a shallow ripoff aiming for mass appeal while Babylon 5 was aiming for more sophisticated audience.
