I can't believe it! Another baby born into the family without both parents! BOO! I LOVED MATTHEW! He and Mary were finally happy! UGH! I MISS SYBIL SO MUCH! In this very season, 2 of my favorite character's have died (Sybil and Matthew!) THIS WAS A PRETTY SAD SEASON 4 ME!

Why is it every time a baby is born the writer kills a parent. Geesh. Mary was finally happy. after all that she'd been through to be with him. He dies in a car crash when he survived a war and being temporarily paralysed. Cant wait for next season.

After Matthew dies they are going to start a few years later and the more i think about it the more im sure the first episode is going to start like this:Mary's voice calling '' MATTHEW COME HERE'' and a little 2 or 3 year old blond boy running happily towards her ... what do you think ? tell me your version of the start of season 4 ... :) -
OH I'M SOOOO PISSED WITH THAT ENDING!!!! They could have at least said 2 or 3 years later or something! Just a crappy way to end this season.

i love this show. at first i felt it was too, erm... "preachy" about how things really were back then. always trying to over explain the do's and don'ts of the etiquette through the characters roles. i did'nt know for sure if people just acted as expected without giving thier observations verbally (on the behavior of others) or if there really was so much critiquing going on. Either way, i'd love for it to go. i feel that it somehow distracts us away from the characters roles and takes a bit of the story a bit as they self-explainatory things and i for one enjoy noticing character behavior and the mystique surrounding it. often googling to find out if that was really how it was in the victorian era. great show though really great to have something like this in 2013!!!

Don't get me wrong, I certainly am not hoping for the prospect. I just see it as the lazy way out for the writers. Both characters are missing that corresponding spouse in their lives. Both are widowed and both have infant children. The pieces just seem too obvious to this puzzle. I'm hoping otherwise, but Branson has high minded standards now. Who knows who Marry will be after Matthew's death. She will probably be chasing the person Matthew made her feel like; 'his Marry'. I'm calling it right now, little Sybil will call her aunt Marry her 'mommy' in series 4 and Julian Fellows will be too tempted to processed elsewhere down a plot line. And don't forget, these upper upper class Brits in this era don't often tie the knot with someone they're in love with; ie Robert & Cora. -

Not happy with the ending, (nothere) is right if they ended the show at the hopital and an heir everyone would have been happy. I do not see Marry and Branson togheter. They can't just make Marry's character change like that. At the first kiss between these two I will stop watching. -

Guys, I know this is supposed to be 'good' television, but really, was it ever anything more than a soap opera with gorgeous clothes? I kind of like that they're just owning the over-the-top ridiculousness of it at this point.

Great Series. Too bad the writers have no imagination. Series 4 better have some origonal plots, if not, I am afraid there will be another death. That one being a cancelation of 'Downton Abbey' itself!!! :(

Lord F is running out of ideas. He's repeating plot points (death after a baby, feisty maid, unhappy gay relationship, rebellious daughter, servants' ball, hunting as a backdrop for angry confrontation). Honestly, come up with something fresh because your audience won't put up with it.

Julian Fellowes -- missed the opportunity to supply the third series with IDEAS behind the plot. That would have given the show an incredible content in wider historical context. I consider it rather serious failure and the consequence is that the show and also the Christmas special 2012 ended up like a cheap soap opera, yet with good dialogues and good actors. Sometimes superb actors can "save" the bad show, but this time unfortunately, it was even beyond their artistic abilities.
Stop blaming Dan for leaving. Jullian only intended there to be three series'. That's where it should have ended. The question is, what is the motivation of the whole production for series 4? If the reason is solely money, it is wrong. ITV earns allegedly incredible amount of money from over numerous ads during the show, although it is clear that the costs of the show are also very high. So, Dan Stevens, you are not greedy but you have personal right to pursue whatever you wish to in your career.
Julian Fellowes has displayed that his strength lies in beginnings, and not endings. He is great at creating good story ideas and characters, but then he doesn't know what to do with them. He should have brought other writers on board to finish Downton out. -

I didn't want Matthew to go, but had resigned myself to it. However, Matthew's character did not deserve that ending. Last night I went back and watched Season 1 and it is just so superb.
If Dan Stevens hadn't had to deal with the wheelchair storyline like he did in Season 2, or had to deal with saying super cheesy lines such as, "now we can start making babies," in Season 3 or, "I know you're nice because I've seen you naked," in the Christmas special, I'm convinced he'd have stayed.
I am mad at Julian Fellowes because I feel like he's been turning the magnificence of the original story and characters to a show that's flopped. Despite the bad writing, though I'm also mad at Dan Stevens for leaving, mostly to pursue his Great American Career. I feel like he could have given them more time to give Matthew a proper departure. I'm so disappointed in how the show has been going.
It could have been a classic. It should have been a classic. -

Just because the series has a two tiered schedule (one for the UK and another for the US) it is courteous to give a 'Spoiler Warning' banner but it is in no way necessary or mandatory. Really, if you haven't seen the episode don't read the comment section for people to share in a discussion.

I was disappointed that they jumped 1 year in story to open the episode. There was a lot of stuff they could have gotten to but I suppose they wanted to leave Marry and the family with an heir so that is why they rushed it along. The moment the hospital scene went on way too long like a soap opera I knew that someone was going to parish. To me, the way his death unfolded was really spiteful from the writers because it made you have to be angry at the actor for the way it ended. The scene had nothing to do with the story and it could have otherwise ended very positively in that hospital room. Cut to credits and everyone could have gone to bed with a smile. IMO they should have just re-cast the part. I don't blame Dan Stevens, i just wish he would have stayed for 2 more years at least. The show is only 8 episodes long and doesn't take a huge chunk of a schedule.
Where to they go from here? And, looking back season 2 seems even more ridiculous with Matthew's so many near death scenarios and his undone permanent paralysis. I have a feeling that Marry and Branson might share in each other to overcome their grief... It seems like the obvious play but this show doesn't surprise anymore. -

I tried the link again and did something different. In the past 2 days, right when the episode should have begun, a dating website commercial came up that I had been closing down. This time I just waited. It finished and nothing negative happened. Then the episode started normally, allowing me to fast forward with a mini-view of each scene.

Has anyone else been having problems with the links to this episode? "Allmyvideos" usually works well for me. But 85 minutes into this 92 minute episode, it stopped and said I'd either have to wait another 85 minutes or else purchase SIM time (?). Is 85 minutes some magical limit? I've re-tried that link several times just to watch those last 7 minutes. But unlike other episodes, it won't allow me to fast-forward. I'd have to watch the whole thing episode again with no guarantee that it won't cut off those last (crucial!) 7 minutes. You can imagine my frustration, especially with THIS episode! My imagination is running wild...

What a terrible ending, I'm really sorry to see Stevens go, it's a real let down and somewhat of a betrayal to the fans...I must say however that the rest of this finale was a lot more upbeat and heart-warming so Fellowes did his best not to put us through too much loss :)
As for those who go crazy over spoilers (calling others names and basically losing it over a tv show), what did you think the comments were about, the weather ???? Have enough common sense to not read them for crying out loud ! Don't blame others for your own stupidity. And seriously, a show like a movie or a book) is so much more than mere suspense. Can't you see that ?? Knowing how something ends doesn't take away any the entire story line, does it ?
I mean I knew that Matthew would very likely be written off/killed off in this episode and still enjoyed the hell out of it ! The writing, the acting, the Scottish setting with it's gorgeous highlands and music, the ball... why focus on one detail and call the whole thing ruined ? That's just ridiculous.

Totally agree with you. But I think perhaps, as Stevens decision was so sudden, Fellowes had to somehow killl his character. But you're right, it was a cold and cruel death for the poor Mathew. -

It definitely WASN'T Fellowes' fault, somehow I can see him also being disappointed in Dan. Dan brought in a faction of the audience that made the show so incredibly popular. Blame Stevens, not Fellowes.
The only problem I have is how cruel his death was written. I mean cmon, just lying there, eyes wide open *bursts into tears again* -

well for me, and i belive for many others, is was a cruel thing to kill him just after he had his sun.
why not do it this way- kill him, when his wife is just as the beginning of pregnancy. for example:
he dies, his wife is on shock, the doctor comes in to give her something for the stress, and than find out she is pregnant. that could have been dramatic, but less cruel.(at least, as i see it).
not what is next?... if the show is to get rid of character by character , this is my crazy( and black humor) idea:
Mary is so devastated, she doesnt survive some simple ilness that most people her age and health do survive.
the doctor says 'she just gave up on life, and when a person is no longer wishing to live, the body just dont survive'
the other sister,edith, feels so hopeless about love,(she always fall for the imposible... doesnt she...)
and she decide to become a nun.
the mother, cant take all this sorrow of 2 dead children, so she doesnt leave her room, and become insane.
baits,( is that his name?) is in trouble because the things he did to be relised from jail comes to hunt him. he is sentenced
to life long, and he insist to divorce Anna, so she is free, and not married all her life to a prisoner who lost rights to visits because of his scams to leave prison.
Sybil's widower feels he must leave- the atmosphear after the latest 2 deaths, is too much to bear, taking him back to the days just after Sybil died. -

Wow, wow... slow down things for a minut. I'm as angry and dissapointed as all of you, but you should know it wasn't Fellowes's fault. He said at the beggining of the Season, only one character would die and two babies would be born. It was Stevens decision to leave the show before the fourth Season, so it was Fellowes's task to get his character out of the show. I personally believe Dan is the guilty man and not Julian. Think about it, if he hadn't decided to leave the show, there would have been no reason to kill his character.

I think that Fellowes has a particularly cruel and brutal way of writing out his characters, and the hurt has been furthered moreso by Dan's decision being so abrupt. Downton formed him, pretty much made him into the incredible figure we see in Matthew Crawley.
Right now, to be honest, I am heartbroken. I really don't see how I can watch the upcoming fourth season with any faith in fellowes or the remaining cast. - View older comments (31 more)
