Elementary
- Release date:27 September 2012 (USA)
- Genre:
- Summary:"Elementary" stars Jonny Lee Miller as detective Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson in a modern-day drama about a crime-solving duo that cracks the NYPD's most impossible cases. Following his fall from grace in London and a stint in rehab, eccentric Sherlock escapes to Manhattan where his wealthy father forces him to live with his worst nightmare - a sober companion, Dr. Watson. A successful surgeon until she lost a patient and her license three years ago, Watson views her current job as another opportunity to help people, as well as paying a penance. However, the restless Sherlock is nothing like her previous clients. He informs her that none of her expertise as an addiction specialist applies to him and he's devised his own post-rehab regimen - resuming his work as a police consultant in New York City. Watson has no choice but to accompany her irascible new charge on his jobs. But Sherlock finds her medical background helpful, and Watson realizes she has a knack for playing investigator. Sherlock's police contact, Capt. Tobias "Toby" Gregson, knows from previous experience working with Scotland Yard that Sherlock is brilliant at closing cases, and welcomes him as part of the team. With the mischievous Sherlock Holmes now running free in New York solving crime, it's simple deduction that he's going to need someone to keep him grounded, and it's elementary that it's a job for Watson. Wow. that was incredible. I did not see that coming. I thought for sure Holmes & Moriarty were going 2 have a face/face, but not what ended up happening. Now I know why I have become such a loyal viewer of this show. Give me more!

This is amazing, nice episodes and glad that Sherlock Holmes is still alive and made into Great movies, and TV shows by different countries, and not to mention the Original and deep books. Sherlock is true genius.

Elementary has been renewed for a 2nd season.

Mmm yes, my punctuation was completely lacking there. In any event, Sherlock from the BBC is much better, but if you want to see a little method behind the madness-Elementary is your pick.

My favourite show on at the moment. I really hope that it becomes like House and goes on for a long time. See?, another British actor showing the Yanks how to do a GREAT leading part. No offence.

This is an excellent American adaptation of the famous Sherlock, which is quite different, in that Watson is now a woman, and a sober companion. Personally, I thought that this drug-free version would be a little too polished, but they've left in enough quirks to make up for the politically correct, drug free Mr. Holmes. Miss Joan Watson, as his helper turns into a real partner a little more slowly, over the course of a few month's. They help the NYPD solve difficult crimes, and they are every bit as twisty-turny, and leave most of us guessing. It's a fun watch that I have found to be as satisfying as any adaptation of the novel.

I do like this show but bbc's sherlock is by far better. It seems like this is a cheap knock off.

Tempest1212: Although I think that may have been longest run-on sentence I've ever encountered, complete amen to that!

They portray this man to be estranged from society because of mental illness but if more people could handle the level of thought that men and women like us(Those deemed mentally ill due to lack of social acceptance because of our unorthodox systems of living, interaction, conversation, problem-solving, detachment from personal thought or emotion to reach a goal etc etc), they would realize how completely brilliant we are and how much we could teach other less intelligent human beings if they weren't so close-minded and prideful of their degree of skill and thinking which is nothing less than a joke most of the time.

poor sherlock, he just keeps getting hated on. I feel sorry for those locks too. Can't wait for the next episode, the preview makes me think that it's going to be super funny.

kwild21: exactly. i LOVE Sherlock, old and new (including the BBC one)! This series is good, and tho i am a girl i am finding it hard to adjust to Watson being female, and the focus on the drug use (tho i appreciate this view). part of me really does not like this version...but i cant help but watching anything involving Sherlock Holmes.

Lady_Godiva22: The things you listed as being "taken" from BBC's Sherlock are all thing that are taken from the original books. Since both take from the same source they will have similarities like that. The things you listed is what make Sherlock Holmes himself. If they were left out then they would have very little connection to the original stories. Both shows focus on different areas of himself. On Sherlock his past drug use is barely mentioned while on Elementary it is a focal point of the show. While I love Sherlock it is important to remember that they did not create the character.

Does the empty coffee and tea drinking in nearly every episode irk anyone else? Looks so fake.

They tried to eh no they copied BBC's Sherlock right down to the method of elimination, his fratty behaviour and his drug abuse (to keep his mind busy) and his compleet inflated ego only the gay parts missing witch I found very pequliar but interesting. This show will feed me untill the ''real'' BBC's Sherlock returns!

Oh, Anji... DPH (short for the afformentioned antihistamine) is also used in a number of over-the-counter "sleeping pills" (which is probably why the TV scripters for this show went after its' abuse...), including Sominex (which I do believe is made by the same company as Benadryl), which is just a 2x DPH version of Benadryl, which makes the "let's make the side effect a feature" thing true (this was how both Rogaine and Viagra (both different kind of high blood pressure medicines turned into hair regrower and ED treater, respectivelly...) were "repurposed" because of their side effects for both help and profit...).

does the viewing public, the writers and the actors realize that diphenhydramine is Benedryl, I take diphenhydramine as a sleeping agent, and it is not an addictive substance, it's the active ingredient in Benadryl, an anti-histamine.

very true @moonlight7! I agree wholelheartedly

Anyone who likes this show should definitely check out the BBC's sherlock with Benedict Cumberbatch and also the Granada series " The adventures of Sherlock Holmes". The latter is old, but Jeremy Brett is the ULTIMATE Sherlock Holmes.

And people who keep comparing Sherlock Holmes to mentalist, monk and all other shows... sherlock has been around much longer than any of those characters and they probably got their inspiration from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. :) -
Great show overall and I like Sherlock's british accent and weirdness :)

I'm not sayings is a bad show but all I'm saying is that this show is just like the show MONK

I'm not going to speak on behalf of everyone, or start arguments that aren't necessary, so I am just going to end with, I like this show. It makes me happy to see Jonny Lee Miller, and I always walk away feeling really awesome inside. I'm not sure why, it's just a show that makes me feel... good. Sometimes you just don't need a reason.

This is an awesome show - can't believe how addictive this is - no supernatural stuff to get me excited - plain simple, good show!

It's my first time watching a show like this, and I love solving puzzles. I have'nt read the original work of the great Conan Doyle but for me,"this is entertainment". I dont care if others think its just a rip-off of another show. Tell me what's the difference between vampire series from "buffy" to" beauty and the beast". They all have vampires. So stop hating the show and just watch it and if you dont like it just leave it to those who does.

Sherlock Holmes has inspired many spin offs and rip offs. Unlike the Granada series with Jeremy Brett or BBC's Sherlock this is show is turning out to simply be a show inspired by Doyle's ideas and adapts them very loosely as in The Mentalist and House. It's a good show but, there is not much satisfaction here for those who know and love the original stories and characters.
@Jodpurrs no sherlock holmes was invented by sir arthur conan doyle well before the mentalist ever existed
7 months ago -
This is really good, but a little bit of a rip off of The Mentalist...no?

I started reading A. Conan Doyle 15 years ago. I have read all of the stores and most of them several times over. Sherlock doesn't solve crime to escape problems. It is his passion. Sherlock Holmes is not perfect, he is human, and thus flawed, but he is a genius. Yes, he is a introvert and asexual. I don't consider those to be weaknesses, but intriguing qualities rarely emphasized to such an extent in literature successfully. Sherlock is not supposed to be relatable or 'like the rest of us,' we relate to Sherlock through Watson's relationship to him. It is not Sherlock's emotions that Watson is compelled to chronicle, but the workings of his incredible mind.

I love all Sherlock Holmes. And I love all the stories. Of course the original one is the best, but we can't watch same stories over and over again.

I love this new approach, it is still new and current like the BBC Sherlock, which I adore, but is still different and present in some other way.
The stories are better with every episode. And I like the new Watson approach. Female companion, real hospital doctor, her private life and emotions, very nice touch. - View older comments (18 more)
